The Evolution of the Use of the Holmium Laser for the Treatment of Benign
Prostatic Hyperplasia
Gilling P, Cass C, Cresswell M, Kennett K, Mackey M, Fraundorfer M, Kabalin J The holmium laser is becoming an important tool in the urologists armamentarium. In this manuscript the evolution of laser resection of the prostate using the holmium wavelength is described. This technique represents a significant advance in the surgical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia and allows even very large prostates to be safely and efficiently managed transurethrally. The holmium laser can be used in a variety of ways to treat BPH. The standard technique used by authors over the past two years, HoLRP, combines the low morbidity of a minimally invasive technique with the immediate tissue removal and symptomatic results of TURP. Transurethral soft tissue morcellators will enable further modification of the current technique to encompass even the very largest prostate gland. Lasers in Surgery: Adv.
