Holmium Laser Prostatectomy: ATechnique in Evolution
Gilling P, Fraundorfer M SUMMARY: This review documents the evolution of the current techniques of Holmium:YAG laser prostatectomy. An increasing number of centres are accumulating experience with this wavelength in the surgical treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Newer techniques, including prostatic enucleation combined with intracavitary morcellation, are discussed. CONCLUSION: The Holmium:YAG laser prostatectomy is a procedure which is still evolving. The enucleation procedure (HoLEP) combined with intracavitary mechanical morcellation may even allow very large prostates to be treated entirely transurethrally in a timely manner with significantly less morbidity than other approaches and, thus, represents the state-of-the-art for prostatectomy with this wavelength.
