Lasers in Urology: A Broad Spectrum of Uses
Razvi A, Denstedt J For more than a decade, lasers have been used to manage a variety of urologic conditions. Although lasers have established a clear role in the treatment of some conditions, therapeutic results do not always justify the expenses involved. Recent technologic advances in laser delivery systems and improved understanding of laser-tissue interactions are furthering the development of less expensive, more compact laser units and new applications for lasers in urology. This article examines the current status of lasers in urologic practice for soft tissue application and lithotripsy. Lasers have convincingly demonstrated their utility in the management of many urologic conditions. Although they have not revolutionized urologic practice, they contribute to our ability to perform procedures in a less invasive fashion for the betterment of our patients. It is hoped that ongoing research will allow a greater number of patients to reap the benefits of this technology. Contemporary Urology, Vol. 8, Number 2, 32-48, Feb 1996 |
