The Multipurpose Holmium Laser: An Innovation in Urology
Pautler S, Wollin T, Denstedt J The many features of the holmium: YAG laser make it useful for a variety of urologic applications, including incision of strictures, ablation of superficial TCC, prostate resection, and fragmentation of all types of urinary calculi. The holmium: YAG laser is a relatively new multipurpose medical laser that is currently available for use in urologic applications. There has been a considerable amount of interest surrounding this laser, which combines the cutting properties of the carbon dioxide laser and the coagulative properties of the neodymium: YAG laser. These features make the holmium laser particularly appealing for many surgical applications. Because its wavelength can be transmitted through silica quartz fibers, the holmium laser is especially suited for endoscopic procedures. This article reviews the physical properties, laser-tissue interactions, and clinical applications of the holmium laser in urology. Contemporary Urology, Vol. 11, Number 10, Oct 1999 |
