Barak S, et al. The role of lasers in ambulatory oral maxillofacial surgery. Oper Tech Oto Head Neck Surg 1994;5(4):244-9.

Abstract: The use of carbon dioxide laser in the oral cavity for ambulatory patients is presented. Excision and vaporization were successfully used for the treatment of benign tumors, vascular proliferations, reparative and granulomatous lesions, mucosal lesions (mucocutaneous diseases, pigmented and premalignant epithelial states), salivary cysts and stones, and for surgical procedures including preprosthetic preparation of the jaws, exposure of dental implants, and gingivectomies. The CO2 laser was used with a handpiece for excision and vaporization. An accessory instrument, Swiftlase, was used for char-free tissue ablation. The CO2 laser has the ability to perform accurate hemostatic surgery with minimal postoperative pain and edema. These advantages are particularly important in the treatment of the ambulatory patient.
